Terms of Service

1. Who we are and what this is

Wednesday Table is a website and phone app for people who play American Mah Jongg. It is run by Wednesday Table, LLC, a Texas limited liability company ("Wednesday Table", "we", "us"). These Terms are the agreement between you and us about using Wednesday Table. They are not an agreement between you and any other player, club, league or tournament director.

2. Agreeing to these Terms

You agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy when you create an account, accept them when asked, or use Wednesday Table. If you do not agree, please do not use it. When we change these Terms in a way that matters, we will tell you before the change takes effect and ask you to accept the new version.

You must be at least 18 years old to have an account. Wednesday Table is for adults.

3. Your account

  • You sign in using one of the ways we offer, such as a code or link sent to your email address, a code texted to your mobile phone, or a password. Keep your email and phone secure, because anyone who can read them can sign in as you.
  • One person, one account. One mobile number belongs to one account.
  • Give us accurate information and keep it current. You are responsible for what is done through your account. Tell us at director@wednesdaytable.com if you think someone else has used it.

4. What Wednesday Table does, and what it does not do

Wednesday Table gives people tools to find events, run clubs, leagues, open play and tournaments, keep score, post standings and ratings, and send messages about those events. The people who organize a club, league, open play or tournament (we call them organizers: leaders, hosts and directors) run it. They decide who plays, where, when, by what rules, and what it costs. We provide the tools; we are not the organizer of any event, and we are not a party to any arrangement between you and an organizer.

Wednesday Table is for social and tournament play. It is not a gambling service, and no wagering takes place on it.

We do not run background checks on anyone. We do not verify who a person is beyond confirming that they control an email address or phone number.

Wednesday Table is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Mah Jongg League, Inc. The NMJL card and its rules belong to the League. We do not reproduce the card. Organizers choose the rules for their own games, including any house rules.

If you get our app from an app store, such as Apple's App Store or Google Play, that store's terms also apply. The store is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the app, its support or any claim about it. Apple and its subsidiaries may enforce these Terms as third-party beneficiaries.

5. Playing in person

Events happen in real places: homes, restaurants, community rooms and event venues. When you attend, you do so by your own choice and at your own risk, and you release Wednesday Table from claims arising out of anything that happens at an event, including injury, illness, loss or damage to property, and disputes with other people.

Events at homes. Some clubs rotate hosting among members' homes. A host's address is shown only to people who hold a confirmed seat at that event, and only after they have said yes. If you see a host's address, use it to get to the event and for nothing else. Do not share it. If you host, you decide who comes into your home, and you are responsible for it.

6. If you run a club, league, open play or tournament

This section applies when you are an organizer. In addition to everything else in these Terms:

  • You are responsible for the event you organize: the venue, the rules and rulings at the table, prizes, food, safety, and anything you charge for. Rulings at an event are made by the organizer or the director under the rules they have chosen, and those rulings are between you and your players.
  • Information about your members and players (names, email addresses, addresses, RSVPs, scores) is shown to you so you can run your group. Use it only for the group, follow the law when you contact people, and do not take it elsewhere or use it for anything else.
  • Send only messages your members would expect from you. Honor requests to stop.
  • If you charge money, you set the price and decide any refunds. If you write a refund policy, players see it before they pay, and you honor it.
  • If you offer prizes, you are responsible for complying with any laws that apply to them.
  • No wagering. You may not use Wednesday Table to take bets or stakes or to sell raffle or lottery tickets. An entry fee paid through Wednesday Table is payment for the event itself.
  • You may add a person to your group who does not yet have an account (for example, from your existing roster). By doing so you confirm that you know that person, that they play with you, and that you have their permission to give us their contact details so we can invite them.
  • As a leader you can take down a post or comment in your group, and you will hear about reports from your members (section 13). Use that only to keep the group within these Terms and the guidelines in section 13.

7. Money between players and organizers

7.1 Playing is free. Anyone can have an account, join a club, play, and keep a record of their play at no charge.

7.2 Organizer charges are between you and the organizer. When a club, league or tournament charges a fee, you pay the organizer, not us. The organizer is the seller, and the charge on your card statement shows the organizer's name. Refunds, credits, transfers, and any question or disagreement about a fee, a cancellation or a missed game are between you and the organizer, and the organizer decides them. You can contact the organizer through Wednesday Table. We give organizers a way to issue refunds, but we do not hold the money, we cannot refund it ourselves, and we do not decide refund requests or disputes.

7.3 We take nothing out of a player's payment. We do not add a fee to what an organizer charges, nothing is taken out of your payment on its way to the organizer, and we never hold organizer funds. Stripe, the payment company, charges the organizer its processing fee, and we show that fee to the organizer plainly labeled as Stripe's fee. What an organizer pays Wednesday Table is a separate monthly bill to the organizer, described in section 8. This is the same for every fee an organizer charges.

7.4 For organizers: payments run through Stripe. Payment processing services for organizers on Wednesday Table are provided by Stripe and are subject to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Terms of Service (together, the "Stripe Services Agreement"). By agreeing to these Terms or continuing to operate as an organizer on Wednesday Table, you agree to be bound by the Stripe Services Agreement, as Stripe may modify it from time to time. As a condition of Wednesday Table enabling payment processing services through Stripe, you agree to provide Wednesday Table accurate and complete information about you and your business, and you authorize Wednesday Table to share it and transaction information related to your use of the payment processing services provided by Stripe. Stripe collects your identity and bank details directly during its own sign-up; Wednesday Table never sees your tax identification number or bank account number. Stripe's fees, refunds, chargebacks and any disputes reduce your Stripe balance, not ours. You are responsible for any sales tax or other tax on what you charge, and for your own tax reporting.

7.5 Confirming. Before you take payments, you will be asked to confirm sections 6 and 7 and the Stripe Services Agreement, and we record that you did. When these sections change, we will ask you to confirm again before you set up or change paid events.

7.6 Paying for a game. An organizer may charge for a game, at a price they set, and you see the price before you sign up. You pay before your seat is yours. A full game puts you on its waiting list without charging you; when a seat is offered, you pay when you accept it. A game listed as free is free.

7.7 If plans change. If you give up your seat, miss a game, or the organizer cancels or changes it, any refund is the organizer's decision. How long a refund takes to reach your card depends on your card issuer.

8. Paying Wednesday Table

8.1 What is free and what is not. Having an account, belonging to a club, playing, and keeping your record of play are free and will stay free. Setting up and running a club, league or tournament is free for as long as you do not charge your players. When players pay you through Wednesday Table, we bill you a share of what they paid (8.2). That monthly bill is the only thing we charge for. We do not sell subscriptions to organizers.

8.2 Our fee. Our fee is a share of what players paid you through Wednesday Table in a calendar month, in your own time zone, worked out in bands: each rate applies only to the dollars inside its band. The bands in force are shown on our website, on your Money page and before you save a card. What counts is what players paid you after any discount, less sales tax you collected and less refunds you made. Each payment counts in the month it is paid for. Players you let in free are not counted. We may reduce or credit our fee, for example as a trial offer, and the offer says what it covers. Nothing is charged to set up an event or open its sign-ups. Because we charge only on what players have actually paid you, our fees are not refundable, except as 8.6 says or where the law requires it.

8.3 When we bill you. Each month's bill is charged shortly after the month ends, to the card you saved. A refund you make after a bill has closed comes off the next bill. If a month's bill is under our minimum, which your Money page shows, it rolls forward to a later bill instead of being charged, and anything rolled forward is charged at least once a year. Every bill lists each payment it counted, how the bands were applied, any credit, any amount carried, tax and the total, and we email it to you with a receipt for every charge.

8.4 Changes to our fee. We may change our bands. A change starts on the 1st of a month, and we tell you at least 30 days before it does. The bands in force on a month's 1st apply to that whole month.

8.5 How you pay. Before your first paid event you save a card through Stripe, which stores your card details; we keep only the card's brand, its last four digits, its expiry and our record of what you were charged. Your bank checks the card when you save it; nothing is charged then. You authorize us to charge that card each month for the bill described in 8.3. The charge on your statement shows Wednesday Table. Sales tax is added where the law requires it. If a charge fails, we tell you, and you can pay the bill on your Money page or save a new card, which we then charge. If a bill is still unpaid a short time after its charge failed (your Money page says how long), new paid sign-ups at your clubs, leagues and tournaments and posting new paid events wait until it is paid. Players who have already paid keep their places. Nothing is removed because a payment failed.

8.6 If you have a problem with a charge, tell us first at director@wednesdaytable.com and we will put it right if we made a mistake. Except where the law requires it or this section says otherwise, our fees are not refundable. If you dispute a valid charge with your card company instead of contacting us, we may pause your paid events until it is resolved.

8.7 Anything else we charge for. If we ever charge for anything else, it will say what it costs and what it includes before you buy it, nothing is charged until you confirm on that screen, and we will update these Terms first.

9. Scores, standings and ratings

  • Scores recorded at an event become part of a shared record. Other players' standings and ratings depend on them, so they belong to the event, not to any one player.
  • Scores are recorded by the people at the table and by organizers, sometimes by reading a photo of the official scorecard with the help of AI (10.3). We do not guarantee they are free of mistakes. Organizers can correct a score; tell your organizer if you believe a score is wrong.
  • Ratings are our estimate of playing strength from recorded results, and they change as you play. They are not a guarantee of anything. We may adjust or set aside results we believe were misreported or manipulated.
  • Your name may appear on lists of who is playing, on seating charts, on standings, and, if the organizer or the platform publishes them, on public results and ratings pages.

10. Your content

10.1 What you post is yours. What you add to Wednesday Table, such as names, messages, posts, photos, scores and pages you build, is yours. You give us permission to store, show and send them as needed to run Wednesday Table, for example to show your name on a list of who is in, to send your club's message to its members, or to keep a photo of an official scorecard as the record of an event. That permission ends when you delete the content or close your account, except for the shared record of play described in section 9 and copies kept in ordinary backups for a limited time. Do not post anything you do not have the right to post. Messages and replies you send within Wednesday Table are delivered within Wednesday Table. Sending one does not give anyone your contact details, though a club's leaders still see what our Privacy Policy describes.

10.2 How we look after what is posted. To keep Wednesday Table friendly, we check what people post: posts and their photos, comments, polls, messages from organizers, and the names of people, groups and events. The check looks first for words that are never allowed, then uses an automated system built on artificial intelligence (AI). Photos of scorecards are never checked this way. Something the check flags may be hidden while our team looks at it, and a message or name it stops is not sent or saved; you will be told, and you can change the words. Automated checks make mistakes in both directions, so our team reviews what they flag and what members report. We cannot review everything before it appears, and we are not responsible for what other people post.

10.3 Features that use AI. Some features use AI from providers named in our Privacy Policy, such as reading a photo of an official scorecard into scores, checking a personal scorecard, helping an organizer draft a message, answering your questions about Wednesday Table, and the checks in 10.2. When you use one of these features, or when what you post is checked, the words or photos involved are sent to that provider to produce the result. What AI produces can be wrong. Scores read from an official scorecard can be corrected as section 9 describes, and a draft message is yours to change: you are responsible for any message you send, however it was written. A person, not AI, decides whether an account is suspended or closed.

11. Text messages

Wednesday Table sends two kinds of text message, and you agree to each separately. Our full SMS Terms are at wednesdaytable.com/sms.

  • Sign-in and confirmation codes. When you give us your mobile number, you agree that we may text you a one-time code to sign in or to confirm that the number is yours, from our own number or through our messaging provider. We send one code each time you ask for one.
  • Game notifications by text. You decide what you hear about: the events you sign up for, the kinds of events you ask to hear about, and the clubs and leagues you follow. If you turn on text notifications, you agree to receive texts from Wednesday Table about those things, such as reminders, changes to an event, a seat that has opened for you, new events that match what you are looking for, and notes that a club, league or event you are part of has sent you a message. Every text is written by Wednesday Table. It is never turned on for you and it is not a condition of playing or of buying anything. Message frequency varies.
  • For both kinds: message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving that kind of text, and HELP for help, or email director@wednesdaytable.com. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. If your sign-in codes come from the same number as your notifications, replying STOP stops both; reply START to receive texts again, or sign in another way.
  • We never show, share or sell your mobile number. Your club's leaders, the host or director of an event, and other players never see it, and we do not share it or your text-message consent with any third party or affiliate for marketing or any other purpose. The only company that handles your number is the one that delivers our texts and sign-in codes, and only to deliver them. Wednesday Table's own administrators can see it to support you.
  • We send texts only where we offer texting, and your settings show whether it is available where you live.
  • We do not send marketing texts.

12. Email and app notifications

We email you about the events you play in and the groups you belong to, and the phone app can notify you the same way if you allow it. You choose what you hear about, and how, in your settings, every email carries a link to them, and app notifications can be turned off in the app or on your phone.

13. Behaving well: our community guidelines

13.1 What we ask. Play fair and be decent to people. These guidelines apply to everything you post, comment, send or name on Wednesday Table:

  • Be kind. No insults, threats, harassment or hateful remarks about anyone, including about who they are.
  • Keep it right for the whole table. Everyday words are fine; cursing at people, sexual content and graphic violence are not.
  • Keep other people's information private. Do not post anyone's phone number, email or address, and never share a host's address.
  • No selling or spam. Organizers may announce their own events; do not use Wednesday Table to advertise anything else.
  • Post only what you have the right to post: your own words and photos, or ones you have permission to use. Do not post the NMJL card or its contents.
  • Tell the truth about scores, games, people and places.

Do not use Wednesday Table to harass anyone, to send unsolicited messages, to collect other people's information for purposes outside Wednesday Table, to misreport scores, to interfere with the service or its security, or to break the law.

13.2 Reporting something. Every post, comment and photo on a post has a Report link. A report goes to the group's leaders and to our team, and either may act on it. You can also email us at director@wednesdaytable.com. You can also block someone, so you no longer see what they post.

13.3 What happens when the guidelines are broken. We, and the leaders of the group where it happened, may hide or remove what was posted. Depending on how serious it is and whether it has happened before, we may give a warning, pause someone from posting, or suspend or close the account. Something serious, such as a threat, can lead straight to closing an account. Organizers may also remove anyone from their own group.

13.4 Copyright. If you believe something on Wednesday Table uses your work without permission, email director@wednesdaytable.com with what it is, where it appears and how to reach you. We will remove what infringes and tell the person who posted it, and we may close the account of anyone who does it repeatedly.

14. Closing your account

You may close your account at any time from your account settings, on the website or in the app. When you do, your name is replaced with "Closed account" and your email, phone number, address and photo are removed. The record of games you played and scores posted stays, without your name attached, because other people's standings depend on it. Payments you made to an organizer remain in that organizer's records and with Stripe. We may close an account that breaks these Terms.

15. Changes and availability

We work to keep Wednesday Table available and we will tell organizers about planned downtime where we can, but we do not promise it will never be unavailable, and we may change, add or discontinue features. We may update these Terms as Wednesday Table changes; section 2 says how you will hear about a change that matters. A tournament director should always have a paper fallback.

16. What we promise, and what we do not

Wednesday Table is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free or that scores, standings, ratings, scorecard reads and other results produced with AI will be correct.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data or profits, arising from Wednesday Table. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to Wednesday Table is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or one hundred US dollars.

17. Responsibility to us

If someone brings a claim against us because of something you did on Wednesday Table, because you broke these Terms, or because of an event, club, league or tournament you organized, you agree to defend us and cover what it costs us.

18. Law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that we cannot resolve by talking will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Harris County, Texas, and you agree to that venue.

If any part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Sections 5, 7.2 through 7.4, 8.5, 8.6, 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 18 and 19 continue after your account closes.

19. If you are in Canada

19.1 Prices in Canadian or US dollars. A club or organizer in Canada charges in Canadian dollars, and its prices show as C$, for example C$15. A Canadian organizer may instead price an event in US dollars, shown as $, for example $15. Every price shows its currency, and you pay in that currency. A US club's events are in US dollars. If your card is in another currency, your card issuer converts the amount and may charge you a fee for it.

19.2 Organizers in Canada: our bill is in US dollars. We bill Canadian organizers in US dollars, as section 8 describes. What players paid you in Canadian dollars in a month is converted to US dollars at the Bank of Canada's daily exchange rate for the last business day of that month, and the bands in 8.2 then apply in US dollars. Every line of your bill shows the amount in Canadian dollars, the rate and the amount in US dollars. What players paid you in US dollars counts as it is, with no conversion. Your bank may add a foreign transaction fee to a charge in US dollars. If you price an event in US dollars, Stripe may convert what players pay into Canadian dollars before it pays you, at its own rate and fee; that is between you and Stripe.

19.3 Taxes. The GST/HST and any provincial sales tax on what players pay you are yours to account for, as section 6 says. You may give us your GST/HST number with your billing details. We charge tax on our fee where the law requires it.

19.4 No prizes on paid events. A Canadian club's paid events may not award prizes, and Wednesday Table's prize features are not available for them. Events with no entry fee may have prizes.

19.5 Reporting. If Canadian law requires us to report what organizers receive through Wednesday Table, we will ask Canadian organizers for the tax details that reporting needs and report as the law requires.

19.6 Text messages in Canada. Where we offer texts in Canada, we send them only with your express consent, each one identifies Wednesday Table, and you can stop them at any time as section 11 describes. They may come from a Canadian or a US number.

19.7 Your rights as a consumer. If you live in Canada, the consumer protection laws of your province may give you rights that these Terms cannot take away. Nothing in these Terms limits those rights, and section 18's choice of Texas law and courts applies only as far as your province's law allows.
